Top Ten New Years Destinations.

Scroll through to find out this #1 new years destination!

When the holidays come around, searching for the right Christmas gift for each friend and
relative is not the only duty many of us have. Finding something fun and memorable to do on New Year's Eve is also a top priority. However, because it is such a common party occasion, there is a lot of pressure to do something original. One way to have a memorable New Year's is to spend it away from home; use your vacation time wisely and visit a top party destination. In fact, with these 10 hotspots, you'll be partying like it's 1999...

Number 10 - Hawaii

Whether part of an all-inclusive package or on your own, there is a lot to do in Hawaii during New Year's. Romantically inclined couples will want to reserve a table at some of the state's finest restaurants and then relax on the beach with nothing more than a Mai Tai and some privacy. Even single men can keep busy, as many hedonistic-like parties take place along the beaches of Oahu and Hawaii's Big Island.
You can book a nightlong cruise from Waikiki as well, where a nightclub atmosphere and live band can be found on a luxury yacht. As midnight approaches, those onboard will have a great view of the New Year's Eve fireworks. Of course, each resort within Hawaii offers its own full party, replete with seven-course meals, dancing and champagne. Pick your poison on New Year's, because Hawaii has got it all.

Must-do: Try to get tickets to a Hawaiian gala, where traditional New Year's practices are mixed with good old-fashioned fun.

Number 9 - Vienna, Austria

True metrosexuals will appreciate a New Year's stay in Austria's fine capital. Substitute nightlong dance raves with dignified balls and loud club music with the world's best symphonies. The Old World city comes alive by offering the Kaiserball at the Hofburg Palace on New Year's Eve, as well as Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 performed by the famous Vienna Symphony Orchestra at the Konzerthaus and a Champagne Brunch in an elegant Viennese hall, both on New Year's Day.

Numerous other classical music concerts are organized in Vienna, and there are several private galas organized by hotels. Research some of these events or simply have a go at Vienna without an itinerary. Either way, it will be a high-class, fun time.

Must-see: On New Year's Eve, the Vienna Philharmonic puts on a concert at the great Musikverein hall.

Number 8 - Madeira, Portugal

The Portuguese island of Madeira is heaven on Earth year round and only gets better with the busy holiday season. The linking of a great culture and unforgettable food with a party atmosphere makes this place a prime New Year's destination. You can rent out a villa and soak up the atmosphere and beaches, or join the populace in watching Madeira's famous fireworks and outdoor parties.
The latter is the most fun, as partiers from all over mingle in the streets and in discos, dancing to everything from techno to samba. To make your night even more special, Madeira offers some great drinks to go along with your night of clubbing. Instead of, or along with, champagne, try the famous fortified wines, as well as the Poncha and Nikita cocktails.

Must-do: Prior to the festivities, eat out and try Madeira's local dishes, like black swordfish and espetada (meat brochettes).

Number 7 - Goa, India

For five-star hotel treatment and white sandy beaches with a romantic backdrop, think about bucking the trend and visiting India's beautiful state of Goa. Here you'll find a great combination of sun, sand and surf. As such, this paradise is ideal for couples who want to spend New Year's away from loud parties and drunks singing Auld Lang Syne.

Aside from privacy, great beaches and idyllic scenery, the resorts and hotels in Goa will treat you like royalty. Holiday packages include complimentary tours of the state, planned New Year's events for those who want to mingle and several amenities to make you and your significant other more comfortable. With its perfect romantic conditions, couples will go gaga over Goa.

Must-see: Preface a memorable romp on the sand with a visit to scenic Baga Beach and a drink at Tito's, Goa's most popular nightclub.

Number 6 - Tokyo, Japan

For New Year's, two different but equally fun opportunities present themselves in Japan's greatest city. Traditionalists enjoy visiting Tokyo's Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples to celebrate in style and pray for good luck in the New Year. Amazing festivals are held in these shrines, replete with music and dancers dressed in ornate costumes.
When you're done having wholesome fun with thousands of natives, test out Tokyo's famous nightclubs for a naughtier time. These spots bring in Japan's hottest techno and house beats along with some fine local tail. However, because these organized parties attract loads of people and the world's best DJs, you'll need to reserve tickets weeks, if not months, in advance. Check out Studio Coast, Womb and Yellow and let loose.

Must-see: On January 2nd, the Imperial Palace is open to the public. You can tour the grounds and catch a glimpse of Japan's Emperor.

Number 5 - Morocco

When the champagne-filled parties get old, it's time to consider something completely different. Certain Moroccan tour companies organize desert tours for New Year's, where travelers get to spend the memorable night in an incredible oasis. You can stay in the ancient city of Ouarzazate, then move out into the Sahara and experience a nomadic lifestyle with the natives.

The vacation doesn't have to be rustic either. If you don't want to join a caravan and "rough it," simply experience the New Year in the desert, enjoy the natural wonders and a new culture, and then adjourn to your hotel. For those with an open mind, Morocco offers great ways to usher in the New Year.

Must-see: After midnight, catch the bonfire and nomadic dances, which help transform the desert into an outdoor dancehall.

Number 4 - Sydney, Australia
All of Sydney comes alive for New Year's Eve as Australia's great harbor city offers a stunning array of activities that keep the energy up and the champagne flowing. The most popular spot to visit is the Harbor Bridge, where people come in droves to watch an impressive display of fireworks that starts over the water at the stroke of midnight. If you can't get on the bridge because of the big crowds, sit on the steps of the legendary Sydney Opera House. Better yet, book a private charter boat for the night (it's romantic and original) and observe the action from the water.
Those who don't go for the fireworks can usually be found in one of the city's pubs. Try the Quay Bar or the Lord Nelson Brewery for a true Aussie New Year's Eve experience.

Must-do: Prior to partying, grab a window seat in one of Sydney's high-rise restaurants to get a view of the city's activities while dining on great food.

Number 3 - Las Vegas, Nevada

Want to gamble your money away, live in luxury and see the stars? If yes, then hit Sin City for the ultimate bash. The standard Vegas activities are revamped for New Year's Eve, as the strip is closed to traffic after 5 p.m. and is transformed into an enormous block party. Four hundred thousand people come to eat, dance and drink before visiting the shows or casinos. As an added bonus, you're likely to spot as many street performers as you do celebrities.
The ultimate way to cap off your night is to check out one of the many concerts that take place. On December 31st or January 1st, Las Vegas offers performances by everyone from Metallica to the Goo Goo Dolls.

Must-see: The fireworks at midnight, which are best seen in front of Caesars Palace's Forum Shops or on the observation deck of the Stratosphere.

Number 2 - Cape Town, South Africa

There's a lot to see and do in this diverse, vibrant South African metropolis. Cape Town holds a New Year's carnival, attracting 80,000 enthusiastic tourists and locals. This festival entertains in every aspect, offering great food, music and shows all night long.

Aside from the carnival, New Year's Eve party organizers see to it that Cape Town turns into a welcoming city. Outdoor concerts, fireworks and a hospitable atmosphere in most restaurants mean you can find something to do in every corner. As the hour draws closer to midnight, an array of jazz bars and nightclubs offer up a chance to party in Cape Town's unique setting.

Must-see: The V&A Waterfront, which is Cape Town's fine harbor area and a great place to grab a drink and watch traditional African song and dance in the many lounges nearby.

Number 1 - Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

Rio is a party city all year round, so imagine the ruckus that occurs when it's time to ring in the New Year. Copacabana Beach serves as the setting for many of the outdoor parties, which are characterized by thumping samba music and many, many beautiful Brazilian females. In accordance with tradition, the two million partiers who drink and groove on the sand are usually all dressed in white, so follow along and soak up the wicked atmosphere.
If the weather isn't as hot as the atmosphere, check out the nightclubs that run along Copacabana Beach. The parties are a guaranteed good time, but just like any other New Year's event, you must be prepared to pony up a fair amount of cash for entrance fees and booze.

Must-do: At the stroke of midnight, celebrate by going for a dip in the ocean.

Start The Year Off Right
Forget your regular New Year's bash; by setting aside some vacation time and visiting one of these 10 places, you'll be part of an unforgettable event. Whether you rough it in Morocco, go clubbing in Tokyo or dance on the beaches in Rio, there are unique ways to celebrate this December 31st.

Reducing The Debt Of Travelling

Seeing the world can be an expensive past time, spending on the greater side of £1000 for a round the world ticket and then you have all the expenses of food, accommodation and of course the experiences that come hand in hand with the travels.

Luckily, there are opportunities available for the cash strapped traveller that will help when travelling around the world. Places that are used to backpackers passing through may have jobs available, fruit picking being the prime opportunity, this can be an enjoyable activity as you may find yourself travelling to a vineyard with a group of likeminded travellers, spending the days in hard labour in the heat, but you may just get all the wine you could drink and make some friends on the way.

The agricultural sector in Australia is enormous and there is an abundance of crops to picked all over the country, a smart traveller can plan where it is you are going to travel by when the harvesting period is for the produce grown in that area. This can be tricky to work out, but can be done with great effect and lessening the burden of the costs of accommodation and food.

This is just one method of lessening the financial impact but you can sign up to the services such as couchsurfing.com which connects people with a spare settee to people who like you want to see the world without incurring the costs. Hitchhiking is another great method of keeping the costs down but is not always recommended, depending on where about in the world you are.

There are many voluntary schemes available, which on the face of it seems like it’s not really a way to make any money which is right. But there are opportunities to save money as some organisations will provide food and lodgings, but again there is a huge grey area in this as many companies will charge an up front referral cost to cover such expenses and can leave you well out of pocket. The best way to find these kind of opportunities is to apply before you go as to have your journey planned out.

There are other ways to make money using the internet if you think you are going to be able to access the web over your journeys. If you are smart about it, then you could end up making just as much money as you are spending. Three steps to making money online, set up a blog and try to blog your experiences, take great photos and write reviews.

Setting up a blog site you can get some money from the Google Adsense if you happen to build up a decent following. Taking high quality pictures and selling them, if you fancy yourself as a bit of a skilled photographer you can attempt to sell the works on the many stock photo sites situated around the web such as Getty images or Shutter point, it might not be a way of making quick money but over the course of your travels it could end up buying you a meal or two.

Another great service is on beforeyoubackpack.com, a site that will pay you $5 for every review of accommodation you make, and in Asia and places where the accommodation is cheap anyway you can find that this pays for your nights sleep.

You are going to spend a whopping amount of cash no matter where you go, but if you plan effectively you can definitely subsidise your trip abroad and possibly lengthen the trip with some of these money making ideas.

Tips For Backpackers

Experiencing the world with nothing but the clothes you’re wearing and a few items in your backpack may seem like your idea of bliss. Waking up and not knowing where each day will take you is the driving force behind many when deciding to go backpacking, however most of us don’t have unlimited funds to spend whilst we are away. The best way to get the most from your budget is with a little preparation, here are some tips on how to get the most out of your money when backpacking.

Purchase Travel Insurance

When budgeting for your travels purchasing travel insurance may not seem like something that should be high up on your list of priorities. For that comparatively small payment before you leave having travel insurance can mean the difference between a minor inconvenience becoming a major problem that means your entire trip coming to an abrupt end.

There are plenty of great deals to be had, with many companies offering specific backpackers insurance to cater for your needs. Visit price comparison site such as moneysupermarket.com to ensure you’ve got the very best deal on your insurance before you travel.

Do your research

The thought of going wherever your travels take you seems a fantastic idea, unfortunately any kind of budget is quickly diminished if you are purchasing expensive last minute tickets and staying in the only hotel rooms that are left available when you arrive at each destination.
The best thing you can do to get the most out of your travels is to research the area you are travelling too, make a plan of your route and how you will travel from city to city.
The internet is a mine of information, use it, read online travel guides, join online travel communities and forums and take others advice on the hostels that are the best value for money, a restaurant off the beaten track that does great food cheaply and which bus companies to avoid.
Don’t learn the hard way by experiencing being unprepared whilst overseas.

Pack wisely

The most valuable thing you will have with you whilst travelling is your back pack, it will house everything you own for the duration of your trip and you will never be too far from it. A useful tip is to have a back pack that doesn’t look brand new, thieves are more likely to target luggage that looks brand new than if it is a little more scuffed around the edges. Only carry what you must, if you pack 5 pairs of jeans and high heeled shoes your back won’t thank you and you will soon get tired of carrying them around.
Some staples for your backpack include, flip flops for use in often dirty hostel shower rooms, a ball of string, useful for many of occasions, a temporary close line or tying belongings to your back pack, a sarong, great as a blanket or cover up or even to provide some privacy if hung up across bunk beds in a hostel and a small torch, even on a key ring can be very helpful.

Thanksgiving Travel to Be Worse Than Usual: What You Can Do

Get ready for an especially annoying Thanksgiving travel experience this year. If you’re flying over the holiday, you’re probably already well aware that airline prices are higher; according to CBS Travel Editor Peter Greenberg, we’re shelling out about 50 percent more this year than last. But wait, it gets worse. Prep yourself for enduring a sardine experience to get to your turkey destination as the Air Transport Association says flights will be packed to 90 percent of capacity.

According to Bloomberg, that will make air travel the most crowded it’s been since 1944, and travelers back then didn’t have to deal with interminable security check lines and mano-a-mano jostling for overhead storage space. Planning to stick to the ground for your Thanksgiving travels? Well, gas prices are already 7 to 9 percent higher than a year ago. And if the Federal Reserve’s QE2 policy keeps pushing the dollar down, that will likely mean prices at the pump will head even higher, as the cost of oil — priced in U.S. dollars — rises. The weekly gas price survey from AAA shows that a gallon of regular rose 6 cents last week.

Here are some tips on how to navigate the costs and stress of holiday travel:

Air Travel

Make a dramatic entrance…and slip out early. If you’ve yet to book your flight, CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg suggests avoiding any Wednesday flight — typically the busiest travel day of the year — and plan on catching on early flight on Thursday morning. That is indeed the least crowded travel day during the holiday week, according to the ATA. The same theory works for the return flight; Sunday is a killer, so try to head home on Saturday if you can to avoid some of the crowds. You’ll also save a bundle avoiding peak travel surcharges. Greenberg says he recently found an LA-NY roundtrip for $279 by avoiding the Wed-Sun time frame, nearly half the cost of traveling during the peak days.

Develop a family baggage strategy. No, I’m not offering tips for navigating the conversation around the Thanksgiving table, but how to minimize the financial and psychic cost of dealing with checked baggage. Greenberg is a big fan of shipping your luggage via FedEx or UPS Ground. Yes, that means getting organized well in advance so you can mail your luggage at least three to four days ahead of your arrival. “It may end up costing you $15 to $20 more than paying for a checked bag,” says Greenberg. “But your baggage won’t be lost and you won’t lose 2 1/2 hours of your life waiting standing around checking bags and dealing with baggage claim, assuming the airline doesn’t lose your bag.”
Save on baggage fees in the future. If you tend to travel on Delta or Continental you may be able to avoid the checked baggage fee — which can run as high as $200 roundtrip for a family of four — by opening a credit card sponsored by the airline. That typically entitles you to free checked baggage. Yeah, your credit score might take a temporary ding when you open a new credit line, but you’ll save plenty if you are frequent fliers.

Auto Travel

Invest in EZ-Pass. If your route involves toll roads, bridges, and tunnels, and you have yet to outfit your car with a transponder that entitles you to zip through the express lane, what exactly are you waiting for? You know there’s going to be a lot of traffic; any chance to move through it faster seems like a smart family survival tactic.

Buy a cheap portable DVD player. Okay, if kids are in the mix, and you’ve yet to take the plunge into the DVD-equipped mini-van, a good investment could be a portable DVD player for everyone’s sanity. Maybe I’m the last person to realize this, but you can pick up a portable player for under $100 these days. My MoneyWatch colleague Sarah Lorge Butler has a great list of kid-travel survival tips, including the advice to invest in headphones for the kids as well. (By the way, if you and the kids don’t get carsick reading on the road, Sarah recently shared a fabulous list of terrific children’s’ books.)

Get on the bus. If you’ve only got a few hundred miles to get where you need to go, a bus can be the most economical mode of transport and save you plenty of road rage. And if you haven’t checked out buses lately, take another look. Many bus lines have added comfy seats and free wireless.

Selecting A Good Hotel

Every time you look on tour, the first thing we have in our mind is a comfortable place. If your destination is not a very familiar place, it is necessary to know the details of various hotels in the area. Internet is a good source on the matter. All relevant information should be collected. Ads will appeal an excellent accommodation at lower prices, but it is better to ensure the authenticity and credibility of these establishments. Sometimes misleading advertising will make your trip and stay horrible.

VISIT THE WEB: It is very important to visit the websites of hotels and resorts to convince the facilities available. The details of the property, address, telephone or telex, email address, etc. should be collected and verified by contact with them. If it is possible to order the testimony of important guests who stayed there in the recent past. Information such as credit card acceptance services as car rentals, communications and currency exchange are important. Once they are convinced of the bona fides of the establishment, book accommodation and insist on a note of acknowledgment indicating the details of the power it offers. Also check if you are receiving the head rail or the Port of Air and transfer agreement will be for them.

Top 10 Most Haunted Places

Everyone seems to know of at least one haunted house; as kids there was almost certainly one in our own neighbourhood. This list contains the most famous and most haunted places in the world. If you have had any experiences of a similar nature, feel free to tell us about it in the comments. I should add, before starting, that I am a skeptic; I have written this list for entertainment value.

1. Borley Rectory, Essex, England
The haunting of the Borley Rectory during the 1920s and 1930s, is undoubtedly one of the most famous in Britain, as well as being one of the most controversial. The wealth of sightings and experiences by independent witnesses, suggests that although much of the phenomena can be explained in rational terms, a percentage remains which can still be seen as inexplicable at the present time.

2. The Whaley House, California
Author deTraci Regula relates her experiences with the house: “Over the years, while dining across the street at the Old Town Mexican Cafe, I became accustomed to noticing that the shutters of the second-story windows [of the Whaley House] would sometimes open while we ate dinner, long after the house was closed for the day. On a recent visit, I could feel the energy in several spots in the house, particularly in the courtroom, where I also smelled the faint scent of a cigar, supposedly Whaley’s calling-card. In the hallway, I smelled perfume, initially attributing that to the young woman acting as docent, but some later surreptitious sniffing in her direction as I talked to her about the house revealed her to be scent-free.”

3. Raynham Hall, Norfolk, England
aynham Hall is a country house in Norfolk, England. For 300 years it has been the seat of the Townshend family. The hall gave its name to the area, known as East Raynham, and is reported to be haunted, providing the scene for possibly the most famous ghost photo of all time, the famous Brown Lady descending the staircase. However, the ghost has not been reported since the photo was taken. Its most famous resident was Charles Townshend, 2nd Viscount Townshend (1674-1738), leader in the House of Lords.

4. The Myrtles Plantation, Louisiana
The Myrtles Plantation was built in 1796 by General David Bradford and called Laurel Grove. Touted as “one of America’s most haunted homes”, the plantation is supposedly home of at least 12 ghosts.[9] It is often reported that 10 murders occurred in the house, but historical records only indicate the murder of William Winter. Possibly the most well known of the Myrtles supposed ghosts, Chloe (sometimes Cleo) was reportedly a slave owned by Clark and Sara Woodruff. According to one story, Clark Woodruff had pressured or forced Chloe into being his mistress. Chloe and Clark were caught by Sara Woodruff, and Chloe began to listen at keyholes, trying to learn what would happen to her.

5. Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia
Designed by John Haviland and opened in 1829, Eastern State is considered to be the world’s first true penitentiary. Its revolutionary system of incarceration, dubbed the Pennsylvania System, originated and encouraged solitary confinement as a form of rehabilitation. On June 1st, 2007 a television show called “Most Haunted” went live to the penitentiary. Part of the group went to Al Capones cell. Two people passed out while “investigating” the prison. One member of the team, Yvette, stated that “this is the most evil place I have ever been.” They claimed to have had contact with spirits but there was no hard evidence that their claims were legitimate.

6. The Tower of London, London
Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress The Tower of London, more commonly known as the Tower of London (and historically simply as The Tower), is an historic monument in central London, England on the north bank of the River Thames. Perhaps the most well-known ghostly resident of the Tower is the spirit of Ann Boleyn, one of the wives of Henry VIII, who was also beheaded in the Tower in 1536. Her ghost has been spotted on many occasions, sometimes carrying her head, on Tower Green and in the Tower Chapel Royal.

7. Waverly Hills Sanatorium, Kentucky
Waverly Hills Sanatorium, located in Louisville, Kentucky, opened in 1910 as a two-story hospital to accommodate 40 to 50 tuberculosis patients. It has been popularized on television as being one of the “most haunted” hospitals in the eastern United States, and was seen on ABC/FOX Family Channel’s Scariest Places On Earth as well as VH1′s Celebrity Paranormal Project. It was also seen on the Sci Fi Channel’s Ghost Hunters. Ghost investigators who have ventured into Waverly have reported a host of strange paranormal phenomena, including voices of unknown origin, isolated cold spots and unexplained shadows. Screams have been heard echoing in its now abandoned hallways, and fleeting apparitions have been encountered.

8. The Queen Mary, California
RMS Queen Mary is an ocean liner that sailed the North Atlantic Ocean from 1936 to 1967 for Cunard Line (then Cunard White Star Line). The Queen Mary was purchased by the city of Long Beach, California in 1967 and transformed into a hotel. The most haunted area of the ship is the engine room where a 17-year-old sailor was crushed to death trying to escape a fire. Knocking and banging on the pipes around the door has been heard and recorded by numerous people. In what is now the front desk area of the hotel, visitors have seen the ghost of a “lady in white.” Ghosts of children are said to haunt the ship’s pool.

9. The White House, Washington DC
The home of the presidents of the United States. President Harrison is said to be heard rummaging around in the attic of the White House, looking for who knows what. President Andrew Jackson is thought to haunt his White House bedroom. And the ghost of First Lady Abigail Adams was seen floating through one of the White House hallways, as if carrying something. The most frequently sighted presidential ghost has been that of Abraham Lincoln. Eleanor Roosevelt once stated she believed she felt the presence of Lincoln watching her as she worked in the Lincoln bedroom. Also during the Roosevelt administration, a young clerk claimed to have actually seen the ghost of Lincoln sitting on a bed pulling off his boots.

10. Edinburgh Castle, Edinburgh, Scotland
Edinburgh Castle is reputed to be one of the most haunted spots in Scotland. And Edinburgh itself has been called the most haunted city in all of Europe. On various occasions, visitors to the castle have reported a phantom piper, a headless drummer, the spirits of French prisoners from the Seven Years War and colonial prisoners from the American Revolutionary War – even the ghost of a dog wandering in the grounds’ dog cemetery.

10 Tips for Travelling Solo

Holiday for One

You need not be an intrepid traveller to enjoy taking a vacation solo, nor do you need be part of a group tour to discover all the cool and exciting experiences that this great big planet has to offer. Regardless of gender, anyone can vacation alone and really enjoy it—in fact, sometimes even more so than when being tied to someone else’s agenda. You just need to follow some basic guidelines. So, gather your sense of adventure, and take that solo holiday!

1. Do Your Homework
Thanks to the Internet, it’s never been easier to preview a potential destination. But remember, official tourism websites have an objective to paint only the rosiest of pictures to attract visitors. If you want the real lowdown, a great source of information online is forums like Traveltalkonline. These are the best spots to receive in-depth information from locals about safety and culture, as well as to have your questions and concerns answered in an unbiased manner.

2. Stay Connected
Look for warnings about destinations you are about to visit by checking with the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada website. At this site, you can also officially register that you are travelling abroad so the government can contact you should alerts escalate or if a crisis arises at home. You should also research reliable hotspots like Internet cafés close to areas you will be staying to ensure you can regularly connect with loved ones about your whereabouts and ongoing itinerary.

3. Pack Smart
When travelling solo make sure all of your essentials are in your carry-on in case your luggage gets lost. That means a complete change of clothes for hot, cold, and wet weather, walking shoes, medication, and all of your identification and important technology. Split up your cash and credit cards into different spots so if you lose one set you still have another. Dress for comfort and always have some emergency cash stashed on you.

4. Be Aware
Personal safety and protection of your valuables can be a big concern but needn’t be such a fear that you become paranoid. Don’t dress like an obvious “tourist” (fanny packs, cameras swinging, and home country flag patches) and don’t flash money, expensive technology or wear pricey jewellery. Be aware of your surroundings and stick to main roads and well-lit areas when possible, but walk with confidence and purpose if you end up in unsavoury locations.

5. Be Creative
It’s prudent not to let strangers know you are alone. Little white lies are perfectly acceptable such as letting people think you’re waiting to meet someone until you’re sure they are trustworthy. You can also be creative in finding spots to stash stuff like hotel keys and cash when you must leave them unattended like when swimming at a pool or beach. Travel gadgets designed for this purpose are easily obtainable.

6. Befriend Professionals
Discover secret spots by getting to know local service people such as store clerks, hotel staff, security guards, taxi drivers, and servers. Tip generously to make a lasting impression. Travel writer Marcia Frost, owner of WineAndSpiritsTravel.com says, “When I travel alone, I always eat at the hotel’s bar. Bartenders have the inside scoop on things to do, and you never really feel like you are dining solo when you have someone to talk to!

7. Meet People
Vacationing alone is a great way to enjoy doing your own thing without restrictions, but eventually you might get lonely. A good way to meet people is to be a real “tourist” and join a group tour outing. Or seek out like-minded groups of locals that share a hobby you enjoy and attend one of their functions or go to a local church service of your faith. Having something in common is a wonderful ice-breaker.

8. Be Adventurous
Try things that really push you outside of your comfort zone, after all, you’re on an adventure! It doesn’t have to be something extreme like bungee jumping or dangerous like hand-feeding sharks. It could be as tame as singing karaoke at a local bar or taking a windsurfing lesson, as long as it’s something you’d never consider doing at home. You might be surprised to discover what you’re capable of when no one is watching.

9. Be a Good Samaritan
No matter where in the world you go, helping hands are always needed. Whether it be opening a door, aiding the elderly, taking someone’s picture, or even going so far as volunteering at a soup kitchen, walking dogs at a local shelter or participating in a beach clean-up. Even the smallest kindnesses are appreciated and often lead to new friendships as well. So always be on the lookout for where you can help.

10. Avoid Unrealistic Expectations
If you’re not comfortable doing things on your own at home, then vacationing solo might not be for you. If you’re not sure, then you might first try being part of a group tour or cruise to see if you like it. Once you’ve tackled vacationing solo successfully, you’re sure to feel a renewed sense of confidence and pride you would never have had experienced had you not done it alone. Go for it!

And of course, have fun!

The Best Places to See Fall Foliage in Canada

Intensity and pervasiveness of autumn color tends to be best in the eastern parts of Canada; so, although, the western provinces have something to offer, if the sole purpose of your visit is to see fall foliage, Ontario, Quebec or the Maritime provinces are probably your best bet.

Here are 10 of the best spots in Canada to take in the changing colors of autumn leaves, starting in the west of Canada and moving east.

1. The Rocky Mountains, Alberta
In September and October, the days are warmish and dry in Alberta's Rocky Mountains. The summer crowds have gone home, so you can actually find some solitude as you drink in the reds and yellows of the sub-alpine larch and aspen trees.

Try accessible spots like Johnston’s Canyon and Tunnel Mountain near Banff or hike up to Lake Agnes from Lake Louise. For more viewing spots, consult The Alberta Fall Colour Report. Also check out locations from Brokeback Mountain, which offer stunning vistas.

2. Algonquin Park, Ontario
The size, beauty and proximity to Toronto of this 7,725 square kilometre park make it one of the most popular parks in Ontario. The forests, lakes, and rivers that comprise Algonquin Park can only be explored by foot or canoe.

The maple trees are at their best at the end of September or early October. The aspens, tamaracks and red oaks reach their peak in the middle or end of October. Consult the Algonquin Fall Color Report for fall colour activity and specific viewing spots.

3. Agawa Canyon Trip, Ontario
The Algoma Central Railroad/Railway's Agawa Canyon trip, which runs north from Sault Ste Marie in northern Ontario, is another excellent way to see the colours at the end of September / beginning of October. Consult the Weather Network's Fall Colour Report for more information on fall foliage in Ontario.

4. Fall Foliage Romance by Rail, Toronto - Montreal - Quebec City - Halifax
There is nothing more spectacular or romantic than the dramatic changes autumn brings to the forests of Eastern Canada. Via Rail's special 6-night Fall Foliage vacation features some of Canada's most dramatic and interesting cities like Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, and Halifax.

5. Niagara Parkway, Ontario
The historic Niagara Parkway, or “River Road,” is the route that Winston Churchill called "the prettiest Sunday afternoon drive in the world," and follows the winding curves of the Niagara River, which divides Canada and the US. The loveliest stretch in autumn is between the small towns of Queenston and Niagara-on-the-Lake and reaches its pinnacle of color in early October. Finish your day by tilting back a glass of Niagara Wine.

6. The Bruce Peninsula, Ontario
The Bruce Peninsula features one of the best portions of the Bruce Trail - an 800 km (almost 500 mile) hiking trail - that features splendid Ontario flora, fauna and water vistas. Some of the trees are more than 1000 years old and in the autumn, especially the end of September to beginning of October, the colors are something to behold.

Check the Ontario Parks Fall Color Report for autumn color activity and great viewing spot suggestions.

7. The Laurentian Mountains, Quebec
Québec is famous for its autumn colours because of the sugar maple trees. Also prevalant are the provincial yellow birch and the American beech. Try the Laurentian Mountains for one of the most beautiful displays of fall foliage in North America. Colours begin their peak at the end of September and continue until mid- to late-October in lower elevations and more southern locations. Celebrate the season by visiting resort town Mont-Tremblant for its annual Symphony of Colours festival.

8. Prince Edward Island
PEI forests have an exceptional range of colours in autumn. The warm waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Northumberland Strait give PEI a relatively moderate climate and help create one of the longest fall foliage periods in northeastern North America. In addition, PEI's forests are bear-free and there are no deer or moose, ensuring a safe, hunter-free environment. Consult the PEI Fall Foliage Website for details.

9. The Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia
Hailed as one of the world's most beautiful drives, the Cabot Trail winds around Cape Breton's northern shore and rewards fall color seekers in a spectacular way. Fiery reds, oranges, crimsons and golds blanket the highlands and reach their peak the first or second week of October. Try visiting Cape Breton Highlands National Park or Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site. Consult the Nova Scotia Fall Foliage Report for detailed autumn color activity.

10. Fundy Coastal Drive, New Brunswick
Like the Cabot Trail, the Fundy Coastal Drive is another outstanding maritime journey. See some of the highest tides in the world and enjoy the vivacious reds and deep pumpkin oranges, which are at their best the first two weeks of October during Canada’s Thanksgiving Weekend. Tree variety and colors are similar to New England's, yet crowds are minimal in New Brunswick by comparison. See a map of New Brunswick. Find out more about New Brunswick in the fall.

The Irishman's Guide To Dublin

Dublin has been one of Europe’s most welcoming and intriguing cities for decades. However, since Ireland was crowned the Celtic Tiger in the early 21st century thanks to the rapid economic growth it experienced, the Irish capital has become one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations. This reputation has continued, despite the decline in economic fortunes seen by the country as the global recession took hold. However, while most visitors to the city flock to tourist-friendly hotspots like Temple Bar, the Guinness Storehouse and Dublin Castle, it pays to do as the Irish do when you visit Dublin. So while you’re there, make sure you seek out a few handy hints and tips from local Irishmen and women.

Unlike some large European cities, such as London and Paris, asking locals for detailed help and directions in Dublin is perfectly normal and most people will be happy to stop and chat. One element of Dublin life on which you should seek advice is how to get around. The tram and bus network is fairly extensive but can be confusing, so local help will not go amiss. If you’re a keen cyclist, you may also want to ask about the best places from which to rent a bicycle or speak to other cyclists about cycling etiquette. And if you’re planning to stay out at a bar or a club until early in the morning, it’s a good idea to have a reliable taxi number to hand.

When it comes to things to see and do, most Irishmen and women will suggest you visit the main attractions in every tourist guidebook. However, they may also point you towards sights that have a strong association with Dublin’s history, which was often violent during the colonial era. Glasnevin Cemetary on Finglas Road, for example, runs walking tours that take visitors past the graves of illustrious figures in Irish history. Kilmainham Gaol on Inchicore Road, where rebels from the 1916 Easter Uprising were executed, also operates guided tours. If you’re more interested in Dublin’s cultural history, don’t miss a trip to the Dublin Writer’s Museum, dedicated to local literary heroes like James Joyce and WB Yeats, or Merrion Square, which is home to a statue of Oscar Wilde.

For those who want to sample the best of Ireland’s food and drink, a chat with locals can be particularly rewarding. The first thing most Irishmen will tell you is to avoid Temple Bar, the primary location for touristy – and very expensive – bars and clubs. Instead, they should be able to point you towards bars that are traditional but not kitsch – like Kavanagh’s near Glasnevin Cemetery or Frank Ryan’s on Queen Street. Food, on the other hand, is a varied mix of hearty Irish stews and multicultural grub but can also be very pricey. To try a bit of everything at reasonable prices, head to the Epicurean Food Hall on Lower Liffey Street, which is very popular with locals at lunch time.

Although city breaks in the Irish capital may require a substantial budget, the frequent availability of cheap flights to Dublin means that actually getting there can be surprisingly affordable. Looking out for these deals means you’ll have more money to spend during your holiday. And with tough economic times persisting, you may even find some great deals on accommodation, food and drink while you’re in town, and the friendly local population may be able to point you towards these offers.

What Is Glamping?

The idea of roughing it during a camping trip might sound appealing if it weren't for the bugs, wild animals, sudden storms, leaking tents, smelly sleeping bags and questionable food. For a number of people, their first camping experience often becomes their last, but there is now a camping option growing in popularity. Welcome to the world of glamorous camping, otherwise known as glamping. Organized glamping trips feature all of the exposure to the great outdoors as traditional camping trips, but the amenities found at the campsite far exceed anything most campers have ever experienced.

During a typical glamping trip, for example, the tents are often designed with bright designer colors and materials, not the olive drab canvas tents of yesteryear. These tents can be rigged for electrical power, which means occupants can operate appliances, reading lamps and climate controls. Forget about smelly sleeping bags placed on rocky or insect-infested ground, as well. Those who have gone glamping may sleep on full-size air mattresses, or even regular spring mattresses provided by the outfitters.

Many glamping trips do involve the same types of excursions provided by traditional adventure groups, such as safaris, hiking, and river rafting, but the focus is often on the comfort of the guests. Comfortable transportation is usually provided from the campsite to the excursion and back, and guides are responsible for providing such amenities as full-course meals and laundered clothing upon a guest's return to camp. Some glamping trips are more primitive than others, however, so guests may actually have to experience a little discomfort while glamping.

The idea of glamping appears to have been inspired by the experiences of young, rich entertainers and models at outdoor events such as open air rock concerts. Many wealthy concertgoers wondered aloud if it might be possible to avoid the trappings of a hot tent on a muddy field just to enjoy a show or the wonders of nature. Several adventure groups saw an opportunity to cater to the needs of disillusioned campers who wanted to experience the positive aspects of camping without so many negatives. Thus the concept of glamping was born.

Many companies who specialize in camping equipment and supplies have created high-end or designer gear over the years, but few campers wanted to be seen carrying brightly colored tents or packets of gourmet foods. With the growing popularity of glamping, however, many would-be campers are now buying up designer camping gear and other amenities before going on their own glamping trips. Even those on more modest budgets are discovering it is now acceptable to bring along a few more comfort items while camping outdoors. While glamping may still be a niche market, it does offer people the chance to experience all of nature, not just its insects and bad weather.

Dong Hoi - Cave of Teeth

Discovered in 1935, but only opened to tourists in 1999, Phong Nha Cave was made a global Heritage Site by Unesco in 2003. In comparison with its fellow Central Vietnam Sites - The citadel of Hue, the ancient town of Hoi An and My Son Sanctuary - Phong Nha has always been largely off the beaten track a minimum of for international tourists.

In part it has been due to its comparative inaccessiblity/ however, the outlet of your regular air service from Hanoi towards the city of Dong Hoi, some 40km in the caves in September 2008 has changed all that. Now the caves certainly are a 45-minute flight from the Vietnamese capital.

Like Ha Long Bay's rocks, the caves date back on the Palaeozoic period, some 400 million in the past. indeed the limestone karst formations is going to be familiar to the majority of individuals to Vietnam's most northerly Heritage Site. The real difference is in the vast scale from the cave. The full complex is some 65kmlong stretching for the Lao border.

Previously, Phong Nha has received a bad press to be messy and filled with "noisy" Vietnamese tourists. The local authorities seem to have pulled their act together. An everyday clean-up with the site leaves the caves clear of rubbish. Additionally, should you time your vacation for your afternoon, the cave is basically empty. An extra for latecommers would be that the sky at sunset because you motor back over the river on the small village of Son Trach can be very spectacular

What exactly is unchallenged is Phong Nha's beuty. The big chambers posses the solemnity of the cathedral, but on insprired by Dali in the darkest modments. Since your boat paddles across the slow waters the scale and subtle colours from the massive statlacitites and acoustic rock formations are overwhelming.

Boats take a look at the big chamber at the end of the cave which was utilized by its northern border Vietnamese within the American War being a hospital and munitions store. Additionally, it has engravings through the Champa those who occupied the collapse the 9th and 10th centuries.

The cave's status as Quang Binh Province's major tourist attraction has become threatened by. In April 2009, a team of British cavers discovered Son Dong Cave. Some 200m high, 140m wide as well as over 5km long, Son Doong is reputed to become the greatest cave not simply in Vietnam, in the entire world. A six-hour walk in the Ho Chi Minh Trail, the cave is currently inaccessible to tourists.

The village of Dong Hoi is a nice fishing village. The Nhat Le River snakes with the town towards the sea. It is not theonly serpent around. At sunset locals sit by either the river or even the sea and revel in a glass of snake wine - a variety of snake blood and vodka - which locals claim is wonderful for your wellbeing. They drink it with banh loc an area cake made out of glutinous rice paper and filled up with cassave. Looking very much like a translucent revioli, commemorate an incredible accompaniment to the wine.

Stretching for miles into the horizon, the town's Bao Ninh beach is largely deserted. Several fishing boats for sale bod up and down on the horizon, and locals flock towards the beach around sunset. It really works as well for the late evening swim or watching the sunrise.

Dong Hoi is a good base for seeing the DMZ. It's nearer to a lot of the sites than Hue, as an example the underground tunnels at Vinh Moc are merely some 70 km away For a lot more details, you really should pay a visit to: tour in vietnam

There are two options that you can choose from when you are going on a tour. You can either go on a group tour or a private tour. A group tour is when you join a group of people, and you leave at a set time and go to organized places. A private tour is custom designed for you, your wants, needs and desires. Both tours have their own advantages and disadvantages, so you will have to see what is most important for you, and what you can do without.

One major advantage of private tours is that you are able to custom design your entire stay. You are able to choose where you would like to go and what you would like to see. All the decisions are up to you. If you are on a group tour, you have a previously decided schedule that can't be changed. With a private tour, the trip will be more flexible and relaxing, because you won't have to worry about any one else. You will get your own privacy and comfort. You can make spontaneous changes that won't cause any inconveniences to others. You would be able to make leisurely stops for shopping, sightseeing, eating or taking pictures. The downside of private tours is that they are a little more expensive. Obviously, an upgrade in your private services comes with a slight upgrade in cost. This extra money will pay for the private transportation, your personal driver and the coordinator's additional effort to accommodate all of your personal plans.

The primary benefit of group tours is the reduced cost. It is cheaper than a private tour because the entire group of people will divide the expenses for transportation and guides. Another advantage is that you will get to meet new people on the bus, tours or at your hotel. Doing it with new people might make it more fun than doing it by your self. One of the leading disadvantages of a group tour is the inability to make your own decisions. You will not be able to choose the places that you will visit, and there is a very rigid schedule. You can't choose your own accommodations or stopping places. You must be at the bus at a certain time, eat lunch at a certain time, arrive at a certain time and leave at a certain time. The choices of everyone will affect you, and your personal trip. However, if you happen to get an agreeable group, it could prove to be quite memorable.

Your verdict can be made depending on whether your privacy is more important to you, or your budget is more important to you. If you don't mind paying extra for a personal custom designed tour, then it will probably be more comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable for you. A group tour is better suited for the more exploratory people that don't want to deal with the planning part of a tour. They are able to take a cheap, premade trip. Both types of tours are thoroughly enjoyable, despite their differences, and are certainly worth taking.
